The following video illustrates exploratory data analysis for one quantitative variable by creating numerical (and graphical) summaries for one quantitative variable using ANALYZE – DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS – DESCRIPTIVES and ANALYZE – DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS – FREQUENCIES. These are not the preferred methods but they each have useful features that are worth learning. The following files are associated with this video.

  • Menus and Steps Used:
    • Double-click on the SPSS dataset (STEP3) to open SPSS with that data loaded
    • Go to ANALYZE – DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS – DESCRIPTIVES
      • Drag quantitative variables into the variables list
      • We illustrate the results of checking the box to create standardized values
      • Click OK
    • Go to ANALYZE – DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS – DESCRIPTIVES – FREQUENCIES
      • Reset this tool if you have used it recently
      • Drag quantitative variables into the variables list
      • In STATISTICS – choose desired values
      • In CHARTS – we can select histograms and check the box for normal curve
      • NOTE: UNCHECK the box for display frequency tables when using this tool for quantitative variables
    • Save SPSS output by going to yhe output and File – Save or by closing SPSS and following the prompts.
